Mose Allison was one of the most original story tellers in jazz. He was a timeless voice that expressed true short stories about life's realities and blessings. He was a favorite on Cleveland jazz radio when I was coming up and I always waited patiently to hear his preaching and swinging sound. Paul Motian was on drums on some of his early recordings and also played with him with Zoot Sims in the late 50's and early 60's. I started playing with Paul in 1981. In the early 90's Paul had a beautiful reunion with Mose on a few gigs and recordings. I had the great pleasure to make one of those recording sessions for Blue Note Records -"The Earth Wants You" in 1994. It also featured Randy Brecker, Bob Malach, John Scofield, Ratzo B Harris, and others. It was one of the most fun sessions I've been a part of in my career. Knowing Moses and being in his audience was the thrill of a lifetime. It was one of the most joyous feelings you can have with someone on or off the bandstand. His sound and expression will inspire and live on forever.
